Synthesis and biological activities of some benzofuran derivatives with 4-thiazolidinone moiety

Benzofurans are very interesting heterocycles, which are available in nature and show a wide range of pharmacological activities. Hence, different benzofurans having 4-thiazolidinones have been synthesized for the purpose of pharmacological evaluation. The desired compounds were prepared using simple starting materials like salicylaldehyde and ethyl bromoacetate. The reaction between these compounds in the presence of potassium carbonate yielded the ethyl benzofuran-2-carboxylate. This on reaction with hydrazine hydrate resulted in the formation of the corresponding hydrazide. Further, on condensation with different aldehydes gave the corresponding schiff bases. Then, these schiff bases on condensation and cyclization with mercapto acetic acid in presence of anhydrous ZnCl2 yielded the corresponding 4-thiazolidinone derivatives. These compounds have been characterized by spectral methods. All the newly synthesized compounds have been screened for biological activities viz., anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-microbial.
